Swavesey 2020 Cancelled: But Will Be Back In 2021
It will come as no surprise, give the current Coronavirus situation that Swavesey will be delayed for 2020. As many will know this is a charity event and given this, it will return for 2021. I for one am looking forward to attend then, but for now, Swavesey will have to wait. We cannot wait for this all to be over.
There’s few highlights of the UK Pinball calendar for me and each one holds something different in its appeal, I won’t spend time going through the other shows, this is all about Swavesey 2020. What does Swavesey do differently than any other pinball show in 2020? Well you have come to the right place to find out.
Swavesey 2020: When, Where and What?
When? 27th – 28th June 2020.
Where? The White Horse, 1 Market St, Swavesey, Cambridge CB24 4QG
What? Saturday 27th – Pinball on tap with great beer and friends, 28th The UK Pinbal Cup
Do I need to book? No booking is neccessary, simply turn up and enjoy on the day. The same for the competition, sign up is on the morning of the event. There is no fee for the charity competition, as confirmed by Martin in the comments. However donations are welcome.
Is there accomodation at the venue? Not at the venue, but there are many places nearby, many regulars book an airbnb or the Travelodge is a good place to stay too. https://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/20/Cambridge-Swavesey-hotel
As always, tables are subject to change, mainly, as I have two on the list and I change my games pretty regularly.
- Star Trek – The Next Generation ST:TNG
- Black Rose – BR
- The Walking Dead – TWD
- Guardians of the Galaxy – GOTG
- Alice Coopers Nightmare Castle – ACNC
- Theatre of Magic – TOM
- Iron Maiden – IMDN
What’s It Like?
So I started by saying that in the UK calendar there are events that have calved out their niche. Swavesey has a clear niche. It is in a beatiful location, it has a great beer garden and it is beautiful outside. This isn’t a hardcore tournament, although there is one, this isn’t a pure pinball slugfest, although there’s a tonne to play. This isn’t a pure piss up, although the beer will flow.
Swavesey holds such a great place in the UK Pinball diary for the simple fact that it’s whatever you want it to be, but it is super chilled out. It’s relaxed and it runs at its own pace, namely the pace you want it to. If you really want an in-depth review of 2019, check out the 2019 Swavesey Pinball Event right here. More importantly, now time has passed, check out my memories, unprompted, now.
Swavesey Pinball Show – Memories of 2019 in 2020
Oh man, the pub does good beer and good cider. They had a Gooseberry cider on and my word, it was blinkin’ gorgeous. In the wrong hands, it could have been potentially lethal. I had one or two but if you wanted to get right stuck in to it, you could’ve been in trouble.
Glorious Sunshine in the Beer Garden
Oh wow, it was simply superb out there last year. It was made all the better by the company. Just relaxing out in the beer garden, a few beers flowing and talking about, well whatever. Simply perfect.
Burger Van Antics
At one point on the Sunday evening, someone went on a rampage for a burger from a burger van that was rumoured to be parked up on a roadside. Did they make it, did they get that elusive burger they craved? I am not sure. I can assure you though, it was talked about heavily for a long time and the 3 mile walk wasn’t an issue for the beer jacket wearing fellowship.
Of course, Sunday holds the cup, but it’s chilled, relaxed and ran through really well. I thoroughly enjoyed competing in it and the winner thoroughly deserved his win. What a champ.
Get it in the Diary
For me, Swavesey 2020 is just an unmissable part of the UK calendar. If you haven’t got it in your diary, come join me and some of the best people in UK pinball for what I can only describe as one of the best weekends at the pub with your pinball mates. I’ve even signed up my university friends this year to hire an airbnb. So my title defence won’t be too strong, but the beers will be flowing.
